Elm & WIllow House

Architects EAT

The transparency of the addition is a deliberate counterpoint to the existing introverted Edwardian house with its dark heart. Inside and outside spaces are made interchangeable, with glass sliding windows becoming a mere breathing skin. This ambiguity links the old and the new, by allowing the eye to perceive other elements such as fences and clouds that create the spatial order. The U-shaped plan and the suspension of the additional structure were both informed by the preservation of a mature elm and a willow.
