The design concept for the Centre is inspired by ‘outerspace’. As well as being a fun environment that the children could take ownership of, the Centre had to be flexible and of high quality. The centralisation of the amenities/services core ensures minimal impact on the theatre below, and renders the two playrooms located either side more easily managed. The challenge was the complex integration of base building services and existing conditions, and was achieved through extensive consultation with service providers. Both DOCS and Willoughby Council’s best practice design guides were minimum standards. Energy, appliance and FFE selections were based on safety standards and environmental impact.
