Charcoal Lane

Charcoal Lane was originally the colloquial name for a laneway that became a gathering place for intensely marginalised Aboriginal people in Melbourne. Now, it is the name for a “Fifteen”-style restaurant, coordinated by Mission Australia. A simple black and white palette creates a backdrop for artworks by local indigenous artisans, including woven eel traps as lamp shades, tapestries and a dramatic 12m2 image suspended from the ceiling. Silvertop ash, blackbutt and bamboo in the flooring and furniture create a warm counterpoint to the minimal palette.
