This year the prestigious IDEA Gold Medal award is presented to two people who have forged an incredible career and left an indelible footprint on the Australian interior design community. Husband and wife team, Sandy and Peter Geyer are well-known for creating Geyer Design, later simply called Geyer. They are renowned for a brilliant legacy of projects that have shaped the interior design landscape of our country.
Throughout their long careers, Sandy and Peter Geyer worked to change the face of design in Australia, ensuring that interiors were no longer second to the role of architecture, but dynamic and integral to creating buildings driven primarily by the end users’ needs.
Geyer was the first Australian practice to incorporate workplace research and strategic consulting services into its projects and, as a result, pioneered new workplace and retail solutions; for example, Bankers Trust was the first large (initially 1200 people) predominantly open plan workplace, certainly in Australia and arguably globally. This project spawned all future ‘new ways of working’.
We congratulate Sandy and Peter Geyer for their outstanding contribution to Australian interior design and pay homage to their talent, foresight and determination to make a difference – we are all the richer for their life’s work.
