Woods Bagot – Royal Randwick

Environmental systems and strategies include: a mixed-mode ventilation system that responds to the unique pattern of use of the building by allowing passive natural ventilation; an external skin designed to shade the thermal envelope of the building whilst maintaining important views to the track and the spectator precinct; high performance glazing; limited use of cladding materials by exposing the base concrete structure; limited use of materials with high embodied energy; low VOC materials; an extensive sorting and recycling facility in the basement; the building design achieves an equivalent 4 Star Green Star rating; the project achieved a benchmarked 4 Star Green Star equivalent certification; centrally controlled and zoned services are efficient, environmentally sensitive and cost effective.

Looking ahead, a detailed analysis was conducted by the designers and Brookfield Multiplex to facilitate ease of cleaning and therefore minimise cleaning waste and cost. Moreover, the design allows a $168 million grandstand to be utilised continually rather than be used for a small portion of the year, which is not economically or environmentally sustainable.
