Annexe, Art Gallery of Ballarat

Searle x Waldron Architecture

Shifting across hybrid postures of public hall, verandah and bandstand, the Annexe expands the Art Gallery of Ballarat’s function spaces. Glazed panels open up the facade for summer openings and transform the space into a bandstand for public performances towards the adjacent plaza. A modulated roofscape and painted timber linings recall 19th-century back-of-house spaces, while cantilevered triangular awnings form interstitial verandahs. An opening in the wall aligns with the skylights and frames a long bench seat, revealing the historic brickwork of the main gallery.
