Downer Macquarie Arch

This temporary installation over Macquarie Street celebrates the many built works of Governor Macquarie. Created for VIVID Sydney 2010, the arch interacts with the city’s buses, cars and people. Designed as an extension of Hyde Park’s tree arch, 17 arches of electrical conduit were dramatically lit with blue light. The conduit was supported by a steel frame and painted white to reflect the light. A precast concrete and sandstone buttress grounded the arch, while also offering an urban seat.
