The state’s economic history, founded primarily on agriculture and mineral resources, presented the design cue for UWA Business School. Abstracted images from aerial photographs of regions including the gold fields and wheat belt were developed into a series of patterns that was then applied to materials, colours, finishes and shapes. Colours also represent the wider surroundings – the blue glass of the building front acknowledges the Indian Ocean’s proximity – and the copper, zinc and aluminium cladding reference the mining industry. The design ensures spatial flexibility to accommodate shifts in pedagogical requirements.
