The idiosyncrasies of the pre-existing structure were embraced. Original surfaces were exposed and materials reclaimed or added were largely unembellished; for example, the concrete slab was stained. New flooring is black bamboo and shelves are plantation timber. Five new skylights provide occupant-managed natural light and air, which flows through louvres and the vent-controlled skylight shafts (via passive roof fans), and ceiling fans are also available for use. The concrete slab and soffit are exposed for their thermal mass.
