Dynamic thermal modelling software was used to accurately model the thermal performance of the building, informing all design decisions relating to energy and daylight. A below-ground library, performance glazing, dual skin façade and external and internal blinds reduce cooling loads in summer, and sensor-controlled air conditioning and lighting systems ensure they are turned off when rooms are unoccupied. The dual skin closes to trap warm air around the building in winter, with fixed shading allowing the sun to warm the building in cooler months.
