The Letterbox House

McBride Charles Ryan

The peninsula is the place where you suspend formality and convention – and that was the inspiration and aim for this ambiguous building. What is it? Where is the front door? Is there a front door? It’s like a giant multi sensory organ; you can open it up and take in the sun, the breeze and the sound and smell of the ocean. The house pays tribute to the modest suburban beach houses around it with a façade that conceals the immersing scale of the interior. The vivid red wall is the spine of the building, with shelving to hold beach memories.
