What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
Conceptually, the project became a ‘cabinet of curiosities’ encompassing samples of King Street: a laneway, a café and a shop. The original laneway has been adapted to accommodate a ramp, leading to the café deep within, forcing patrons into another world. Inside, a new glass wall dominates. The backside of recycled timber forms the servery of the shop, with the odd coloured board contrasting with the fairly subdued palette. Outside new steel outriggers are fixed to the existing steel columns, supporting cantilevered glazing panels.
