To maximise space within strict height and bulk controls, a sweeping curved copper roof was designed, evoking images of surf boat hulls and humpback whales. The house uses a wide palette of materials, such as stone, plywood and intricately formed concrete, inside and out to create individual, memorable spaces which are rich yet restrained. The materials are complemented by compelling opposites, for example soft sheer curtains, resulting in spaces with alternating planes of solidity and transparency. The result is a house which lyrically connects to its beachside site, taking advantage of available views, light and breezes.
