The Confucius Institute at QUT is an organization set up to develop cultural awareness and understanding, and to teach the Chinese language. A Chinese lantern concept situates the space as a beacon of light within the sombre fabric of the encompassing environment. An outer shell of Alpolic panels contrasts against surrounding face block work walls, defining the envelope, and internal walls sit off the external envelope to emphasise the space within a space quality. White walls and joinery contrast with the dark bamboo flooring and the reception counter top, while splashes of red allude to the ownership of the space without being overtly ‘oriental’.
