The house achieves BASIX certification and applies passive solar design principles, using concrete and stone floors, double masonry walls and living areas with large areas of glass oriented towards north. Excellent cross-ventilation is achieved, making use of louvres, necessitating only ceiling fans. Appliances and lighting are automated and roof mounted solar systems utilised. The pool is heated via solar power and re-radiation of absorbed heat in the slate side wall. Four large concealed water tanks collect water for the pool, laundry, toilet and irrigation. The house engages with the beach setting, but is protected from the harsh coastal environment with durable exterior materials.
