Instyle is a leading supplier of design-driven, commercial-quality textiles, leathers, vinyls and wall finishes for interiors, including office, hospitality, healthcare, public building, transport, public space and high-end residential spaces.

Established by Michael Fitzsimons in 1987, Instyle is well known today for its stylish, contemporary and sophisticated textile collections, which are designed and developed to high technical standards by its inhouse design studio and produced by leading manufacturers in Australia, New Zealand, USA and Europe.

Instyle is an ethical and environmentally responsible company with a ‘whole of company’ approach to sustainability. Since beginning its sustainability journey in 2002 Instyle has established itself as a leader in sustainability.

Instyle’s innovative approach to environmental product design allows a wide choice of environmental products, including the benchmark LIFE (Low Impact For the Environment) Textiles® collection; leather from tanneries selected for the high quality of their leather, their integrity and commitment to the environment; as well as environmental wallcoverings.

Instyle’s LIFE Textiles® was the first sustainable textile collection in Australia that addressed the entire lifecycle, from raw material sourcing to product recyclability. In 2008 Instyle raised the benchmark LIFE Textiles® collection to an even higher level by sourcing EthEco® wool, which was the first time both ethical and environmental considerations were addressed during wool sourcing for interior textiles worldwide. Furthermore Instyle offers an online traceability program FARM TO FABRIC®, which allows customers to trace their LIFE Textiles® throughout every stage of production, from the farm that grows the EthEco® wool with minimal environmental impact through to the finished fabric.

Instyle has played a lead role in driving positive environmental change within the textile, building and interiors industries by advocating for comprehensive, lifecycle-based products and standards. Consequently Instyle has won numerous major sustainability awards such as the United Nations’ World Environment Day Awards and the NSW Government Green Globe Awards.

Halliday Baillie’s range of architectural hardware is supplied to discerning customers around the world who demand distinctive quality and design.

Most people never question the daily devices we use in terms of how they got there or what was the starting point.

This year Helen Kontouris wins the People’s Choice Award. Her entry this year in the Object – Furniture and Lighting category is the Panier stool, a low-standing stool that directly references the intricate techniques and geometric patterns of traditional basket weaves. Clean lines and a tapering form provide a familiar aesthetic, and the highly adaptable stool sits comfortably within both commercial and residential environments. The choice of locally produced and rotationally moulded polyethylene also ensures an energy-efficient manufacturing process.

Innovative production and stage design characterised this dynamic presentation of the full-scale opera The Barbarians, a collaboration between Liminal Spaces and performing arts company IHOS. Staged at Hobart City Hall, the work was commissioned by MONA FOMA 2012. With a central theme of ‘otherness’ the opera features performers that traverse and interact with the set. Different areas signify different worlds, while a 6m high collapsible wall defines the edge of the 30m long stage, providing a projection surface for lighting effects. The audience is positioned on either side of the focal area, heightening the sense of connection between audience members and performers. Rich in visual drama and intelligent experimentation, The Barbarians is a resounding theatrical achievement.

Evie Group’s Spun Lamps’ well resolved concept translates into a striking sculptural form that is clean and articulate. Available in three different sizes and as a floor/table and pendant lamp, the Spun Lamps’ polished mirror finishes come in either silver or gold, and are coupled with frosted glass shades. Inspired by the classic wooden spinning top, the object’s unique feature is its lack of visible screws or fasteners, which heighten the lamp’s visual impact. Assembly is made possible with an innovative screw method that also makes for easy access when the lightbulb needs changing. It is versatile in application and can be effectively installed in a cluster or as a stand-alone piece.

“From A to Z the Spun Lamp has been very well thought out: it has all the ingredients of a successfully designed object.” – Alexander Lotersztain

With a need to expand his brand, Adriano Zumbo’s retail outlet and restaurant in Sydney’s newly refurbished casino, The Star, meets the public’s wildest expectations. This fun, colourful and slightly kooky fitout was inspired by the boardgame Mouse Trap and owes much to Zumbo’s hero, Willy Wonka. The design objective to bombard the consumer’s senses has proved successful through a clever connection of the retail and restaurant areas with a ‘dessert train’, making the theatrical aspects of store come alive. A smart lure for unsuspecting passers-by is the storefront’s luridly-coloured giant ‘mousetraps’ that house all manner of sweet treats. This interior’s details put a smile on the face, making it very much of its time.

Situated on Carlton’s bustling Faraday Street, Baker D. Chirico lures in passers-by with a fit-out that is as eye-catching as it is functional. With the interior’s key design expression being an undulating plywood shelving system, March Studio has succeeded in creating a vibrant vessel through which to showcase the product. The shelves are flexible and can be rearranged to accommodate the different shaped bread loaves, while the use of plywood gives this storage solution a very clean aesthetic. Coupled with elegant decorative flourishes – a pressed tin ceiling and checkered floor – this small retail fit-out successfully combines outstanding design, consumer awareness and strong branding to positive effect.

The thoughtfully designed interior of this hall, rebuilt following its destruction in the Black Saturday fires of 2007, echoes the building’s natural surrounds. Constructed primarily of timber, curved screens provide privacy for smaller gatherings, while the timber floor and ceiling create a warm, intimate scale. The use of a single material palette has been undertaken with sensitivity and the resulting design is clearly articulated. A single, simple design motif has succeeded in providing a visually appealing and functionally inviting meeting place for the community it serves.

The interior design of this children’s hospital is an outstanding exercise in cohesion, engagement and vibrancy. Making the child’s visit as stress-free as possible was at the forefront, and the resulting design strategy has responded to this brief through the intelligent use of colour, wayfinding and artwork. Encompassing a family-centred care model that considers the child – as well as the parents, sisters, brothers and grandparents – the interiors utilise evidence-based design principles to create a new benchmark for hospital design. The six-storey light-filled atrium is the main public thoroughfare. It features key design strategies, or designed ‘distractions’, intented to ‘heal’ sick children through positive experiences and joyful environments. The wayfinding strategy utilises different colour schemes on each level, with each scheme celebrating the natural forms, colours and textures of particular Victorian landscapes. This project is not only a benchmark for its typology, it is contemporary interior design at its very best.

“The level of detail directed at children is amazingly engaging for them, and the furniture is magical.” – Natasha Palich, IDEA 2012 jury member

A series of three different spaces characterises this retail and hospitality fitout in the old Godown district of Singapore. Functioning as unique destinations in their own right, these spaces also sit comfortably with each other, providing diners and customers with a relaxed yet stylish experience. A domestic theme was referenced throughout and the result is restrained and informal, although all details and finishes are extremely well considered and executed.

With a brief to design the “world’s best food store” in downtown Toronto, this project covered all interior design, graphics, in-store communications, packaging and uniforms. It succeeds in delivering the theatre of food production in a space that promotes community. The vibrant interior reveals the building’s history through exposed walls and by the integration of re-used furniture and lighting. It makes for strong visual impact in a lively environment that very much functions as a hub.
