Yuta Badayala [in a new light] is a light pendant produced by Koskela and Yolngu weavers from Elcho Island Arts. The weaving primarily uses pandanus and bush string, collected by the artists and then dyed using roots and leaves. Due to the time and labour intensity of the process, designs are viewed and marketed as ‘art products’. A frame is supplied to the artists for some standardisation of form but the end product relies solely on their interpretation. Each light is unique and is filled with its maker.

A sculptural sandstone wall by Michael Purdy sits within a timber-clad entrance hall, while chalk graffiti by Joy Godley and her team decorate the kitchen. Icelandic fish leather covers the kitchen walls, while the benchtop is made from fossil-rich limestone. The dark, dramatic interior features stainless steel benches and spotlights. The dining room includes a photomural of Pyrmont, handmade pendant lights with over 6,000 light globes and an abundance of fishing net and rope.

The 28-level Crown Metropol hotel features a sensual, wavy silhouette that flows seamlessly through to the refined contemporary interiors. From the guestrooms, studios and lofts to the more dramatic public areas and day spa, natural materials provide warmth and texture. Vibrant shots of colour and excitement are inserted via contemporary carpets, accessories and upholsteries as well as the diverse selection of commissioned artworks that create a New York loft/gallery-type feel. Unorthodox elements, dark, dramatic shapes and earthy, grounded silhouettes inspired by nature challenge traditional hotel design.

Following LAVA’s mission to build more with less, the 2.5 metre tall tigers, each 7 metres long, weigh only 200kgs. A recyclable, light-weight membrane studded with pulsating low-energy LEDs is stretched over an aluminium frame. A supporting installation of 88 mini origami tigers, also made from fully recyclable material, was arranged over the city model inside Customs House.

This sustainable design for a pop-up shop for fashion boutique Lulamae was temporarily located in Melbourne Central over summer. This pop-up takes the street façade of the Lulamae Brunswick shop and transplants it into the urban shopping centre, re-imagining and romanticising it in storybook fashion. The design plays with scale, making shoppers feel like Alice climbing into the dolls house. The fitout is made from 100 percent post-consumer waste recycled cardboard. The prefabricated panels and cardboard columns were designed for swift assembly, slotting together on site in less than two hours.

Combining beauty and functionalism, the Surry Hills Library and Community Centre features integrated environmental initiatives that are intrinsic and multifunctional within the building’s envelope. The interior reinforces the contemporary sense of place, providing open, inviting spaces with good access to natural light. The simple, logical interior consists of four formal elements: an open space, a prismatic glass environmental atrium, a suspended U-shaped timber form and a transitional foyer space. Details are consistent throughout, from overall formal composition to the smaller, intimate scale.

The Glasshouse interior showcases the high quality timber of the region. The donated floor of the Upper Level Foyer and Gallery comprises five local hardwoods and is ‘Mill Finished’, which increases the amount of the tree that can be used and evokes the stresses of the original forest. The multivalent qualities of timber are fully exploited in the auditorium, where intimacy is generated by the scale and colour of the sculptural cliffs of Spotted-Gum veneered timber panels, acoustically designed to reflect, disperse and absorb sound.

Clothes are displayed among a selection of art and antiques chosen to reflect the romanticism of the brand. The central fixtures can be removed and rearranged for events, launches and shows, while the store can be adapted to suit the signature colours of each season’s collection. The designers have created two environments: a transparent storefront that engages with the street, and a private, intimate salon at the back of the store that shows the evening and bridal gowns. Two volumes containing the changing rooms separate the two spaces. The changing rooms are decorated with period detailing and antique shop fixtures, in contrast to the minimalist modern finishes of the outer shell.

The transparency of the addition is a deliberate counterpoint to the existing introverted Edwardian house with its dark heart. Inside and outside spaces are made interchangeable, with glass sliding windows becoming a mere breathing skin. This ambiguity links the old and the new, by allowing the eye to perceive other elements such as fences and clouds that create the spatial order. The U-shaped plan and the suspension of the additional structure were both informed by the preservation of a mature elm and a willow.

This project commenced in 2006 as a residential warehouse fit-out of the former Golden Crust Bakery in Armadale. The building was in a state of severe deterioration and whilst it was perceived to have potential, demolition was initially a serious consideration (as the building was not protected by any heritage overlays). The client, however, committed to retaining the bakery, and the building was re-invigorated with careful attention to appropriate detailing that both preserves and enhances its semi-industrial appeal.

The refurbishment of the Goods Shed North, a heritage listed railway goods shed in Melbourne’s Docklands, presented an incredible opportunity to renew an integral part of Melbourne’s history. Whilst the building’s heritage envelope has been retained, the interior has been designed to be an innovative, open workplace for tenant organisations VicUrban and the Building Commission and Plumbing Industry Commission.

Original features including high ceilings, clerestory windows, exposed roof trusses and brickwork and cast iron heritage columns have all been preserved. Together these form an exceptional backdrop to the contemporary office. Workspaces located to the building’s east and west side wings retain clear lines of sight through the building’s spine whilst for VicUrban project spaces have been created within a central atrium. For the Building Commission and Plumbing Industry Commission design of active and passive multifunctional meeting spaces enables greater staff interaction and connectivity.

Demonstrating what can be accomplished with existing building stock, the Good Shed North’s transformation sets a new benchmark for adaptive re-use projects. However, the conversion was not without its challenges; namely, the complexity of working within heritage constraints whilst achieving the highest workplace and environmental standards, and considering the building’s future adaptation into retail space.
