What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
There was in this home to be the sense of arriving at a natural and built environment that was in complete contrast to the owner’s city home. We began with the idea of the spiral, an acknowledgment of the end of the journey to the beach. As the project developed we carefully considered how the building should be located and its relationship to the heavily tea-treed sand dunes, prevailing winds, possible points of entry and interior versus exterior topography. So what’s the big idea? The mathematician’s complex topological surfaces like the Klein bottle appealed to us. This held the promise of new form and spatial sequence, radically merging of the floor, wall and ceiling, inside and outside. The Klein bottle was the perfect fit to the constraints of the site. Once adopted, the shape of this building had something of a life of its own.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
The client’s vision was to create a home that was unique in design but still functional and easy to live in. Scott Walker and Robert Backhouse of HASSELL used materials such as polished concrete, anthracite stone, and limed white oak, for their simplicity and inherent beauty. The materials primarily had to enhance the space, or in other words, materials weren’t selected to dress the space up but rather reinforce it. Be it through materiality, composition or detailing, ‘innovation’ was driven through a dedication to a project vision of living that is considered, and most importantly, social.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
Located on the Peninsula, the township of Merrick’s Beach is all that a beach town should be. Gravel roads, manna gums, fibro clad cottages and corrugated rain water tanks set the atmosphere. Twenty-six Surf Street sits comfortably within this rural scene with its understated ‘local‘ persona, yet makes a statement of its own. A feature of tea -trees embedded into the cavity of the polycarbonate wall of the house brings the local flora to life, especially at nighttime when the lights shine from the house.
