What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
The Big Idea behind Rosebud Secondary College’s Performing Arts Centre was to forge stronger ties between school and community. This was achieved by providing a visually arresting, multipurpose venue that not only served the College’s strong programs in dance, music and theatre but also filled a facility gap within the region. The internal spaces were designed to accommodate various user-groups and the main theatre is formed from two large areas divided by a folding partition wall. The dance space, with its sprung floor, also houses the retractable seating which, when extended, provides audience seating during a performance.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
What sets the new ‘green’ Moorabbin Justice Centre apart is the vast north-facing, naturally lit lobby in a public building. It demonstrates the stated aim of the project to provide access to the justice system in a transparent, humane manner, visually and physically appealing without compromising security. A series of internal, landscaped courtyards, visible from courtrooms and offices, introduce a pleasant ‘green’ ambience and light into the building while artwork, commissioned from local VCE students, adorns the walls of the foyer.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
The innovative thinking behind this project was derived from the word ‘Exposure’. Edge’s ‘idea’ was to re-invent the gaol as much more than simply an art school gallery. What was created was a contemporary art space that was dignified yet glamorous and conveyed warmth despite the cold past of its origins. As designers, Edge was aware of the project’s extraordinary heritage attributes and were sensitive to the design by allowing the shell of the space to be the hero and to work with the extraordinary history of the building.
