What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
The Big Idea grew out of simple project parameters. Our client wanted a sophisticated steak-oriented bistro, with good acoustics, and a kitchen located in a central location for ease of access and deliveries. In response, we created a central pod, which separates the bar from the restaurant. We defined these zones with strongly contrasting tones, dark for the bar and kitchen, light for the restaurant. As Three Bistro is framed almost entirely with windows, this central pod became the design and functional focus.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
The Storrier Hotel project was inspired by colour combinations and tones found in the Burning Rope series of artwork by Australian artist Tim Storrier. Positioned in the middle of Sydney’s gritty Kings Cross precinct in a street with a distinct European feel, the Hotel required a touch of world-class glam. This was achieved by combining the influences from a blue chip Australian artist, the art deco period of the existing building and the European setting. Furniture and mirrored wall paneling were custom designed to reflect the nostalgic periods of Deco and Victoriana. Modern antique touches such as the clear acrylic, Louis chairs combined with English chintz, floral patterned cushions to convey a very decorative element within this interior.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
When we were first given the brief to transform the Crest Hotel “THE BIG IDEA” for the hotel was immediately apparent. We wanted to absorb and reflect the deeply sensual, moody nature of the surrounding area, but also incorporate the sophisticated beauty of the classic Victorian terraces adjacent. From the dark metallic atmosphere of the lobby you are transported in an original 70’s lift to the reception where there is a playful reversal of colour. Moving towards the bedrooms the environment morphs into a deeply sensual bronze metallic colour palette. This concept is the ant-thesis of minimalism….it’s a celebration of warmth richness & complexity.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
Using the industrial revolution as our underlying influence, Valve set out to create an atmosphere of beauty in the use of commercial materials and fixtures. Our focus was to utilise the common hardware found in the construction of a nightclub as the main aesthetic. Practical components such as the ventilation system and loudspeakers have actually become part of the creative design. Exposed wiring and piping enhance this idea further with an appreciation of modern equipment and their design aesthetics.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
The tone is of one of exclusivity, and this is apparent when entering from Oxford Street. Will and Toby’s is divided into two levels. On the first is The Supper Club, reminiscent of a SOHO, New York bar with a focus on live performance. The décor is raw exposed masonry walls, vivid retro fabrics and ceiling mouldings. Level two is The Polo Lounge, the ultimate Destination VIP Bar. The space is timeless elegance, recalling the fabulous old world charm of a Beverly Hills Hotel. The colour pallet is chic black and white and walls are clad in ornate white gloss timber panels with black marble trim.
