The Elwood Clothing office’s relocation to an industrial warehouse heralded their move into high quality jean-ware and their transition to full Australian ownership. The brief required not only an aesthetic response to the fit out but a strategy of ‘assimilation’. The rare symbiotic nexus in evolution of both building and tenant allowed the existing building and its old stock with all its devalued latent ingredients to in fact become the Elwood brand. The design process was progressive, typifying Elwood’s ‘slow and evolving’ over ‘fast fashion’ approach. The resulting environment is open, relaxed and inclusive and represents Elwood’s motto of ‘Tomorrow’s Vintage’.

The brief for the warehouse interior was simple—avoid convention. The open plan warehouse space was designed with internal buildings or ‘pods’ and plazas as if connected by paths within a walled ‘garden’. Each area is a response to the designers working methods, and areas include a communal studio, resource library, and overnight quarters. The project is constructed entirely in recycled materials (unique to each pod), such as swimming pool decking and glass shop fronts, and enhanced by the company’s own graphics.

Visa’s new commercial office space is located on the 47th floor of Melbourne’s iconic Rialto Towers, and was completed in May 2009.
Johnson & Johnson Pacific relocated to CBD premises following the closure of their NSW manufacturing plant and offices. The new location was a former warehouse and bond store, featuring original timber ceilings, beams and columns. The design concept incorporates a double glazed wall filled with Mylanta and Listerine bottles in the entrance of the building, while shipping containers are used as a graphic motif throughout the office. Partitions, doors and joinery are self-supporting, avoiding direct fixings to the building’s structure to work in harmony with the architectural environment.

StageOne Sound, a specialist sound post-production facility for the movie and television industry, was designed to achieve the ‘Dolby Premier’ standard of acoustic accreditation, one of only eight facilities in the world to do so. As an antidote to the long hours of work spent in dark technical rooms, glazed infills were inserted into existing roller-shutter openings, flooding the front of house with daylight. Lighting levels diminish as one recedes further into the technical spaces. The technical/industrial nature of filmmaking is reflected in such elements as the ‘internal avenue’, created using exposed steel beams and posts, reminiscent of an empty industrial street at night.
