The Westpac Business Banking design became an extended manifestation of the client’s values. Westpac prides itself on its history, as the first bank in Australia, while also embracing the rapid changes of the modern era. Geyer steered Westpac toward a functional, contemporary design solution that is faithful to the building’s heritage, harmoniously showcasing two ends of the design spectrum. This solution exhibits inferences of both the old and the new, evoking a sense of fun and curiosity for the users. For example, the pendant light fittings are made from a material associated with the old, polished copper, but take a simple modern form.

Match, a boutique property development company, requested a contemporary interior within a heritage listed office, formerly the headquarters of tobacco providers. The design team chose to accentuate the architectural features of the building, in particular the original structural columns, while incorporating modern materials. To limit construction and impact on the perimeter walls while replicating early 20th century commercial office design, low height jarrah and obscured glass cubicles were inserted, utilising the Herman Miller ‘My Studio’ Office. Ceiling heights of 3.6 metres and double hung sash windows to the perimeter, demanded a sensitive approach to proportion, use of natural light and detailing.

The new ClarkeHopkinsClarke studio creates a work environment that blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces and creates a tension between street and studio, light and dark. The innovative design supports creativity, productivity and community. “New office” design is explored using volume and space to define distinctive zones—including a foyer and gallery at ground level, reception and meeting rooms on a mezzanine above, and administration and a boardroom that cantilevers above the gallery on level one, as well as the open plan studio and a courtyard.

The plan for the Springfield Land Corporation integrates pragmatic and environmental concerns within the physical expression of client ethos and identity. A 30-metre-long commissioned art wall is central to the design, forming a spine that separates public zones from private. Transparent open spaces either side of this spine place visual emphasis on the tenth-floor panoramic views over the Springfield development. “The Hub” is a central breakout and recreation space, doubling as a presentation area, linked directly to reception. The use of select materials, common to the building shell, and bi-fold doors at key balconies facilitate a seamless connection from interior to exterior space.

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) is committed to developing a sustainable property industry by encouraging the adoption of green building practices. The interior architecture of their new head office is the tangible expression of the organisation’s character and culture, focusing on occupant health, productivity and wellbeing. The project enabled experimentation with initiatives that other clients might not be prepared to trial, such as grey water treatment for toilet flushing, light shelves to manage radiant heat loads and a raised floor to provide a displacement air system. The flexible interior provides space for training and education, and takes advantage of the surrounding views.

A favourable balance of strong contrasting colours, rich timbers, stone and fabric balance the space. The unique and ornate historical detailing is emphasised by clean white lines, offset by quirky elements that fascinate the eye and mind. Exposed and restored are huge timber rafters, the steel structure and a remarkable sandstone wall. Custom-designed workbenches promote flexibility and collaboration, while skylights and heightened ceilings bring natural light to the modern and relaxed loft-style environment. A large monochrome digital print of the Sydney city skyline with a forest of trees before it is countered by colourful, animated creatures—reflecting the natural yet ironic world we live in.

The project seeks to challenge the convention of conservative, cold medical receptions as transit areas. The overall contemporary concept derived from surgical implants, which, though being everyday objects to the Neuro and Spinal surgeon, create soft organic lines when laid on their sides, lending themselves to an abstract floor plan. The space aimed to feel engaging without being intimidating, while being, warm and professional with personality. To achieve this, the suite encourages individuality by selecting materials that are familiar yet have a sensory appeal.
