Zwei Interiors Architecture chose to ‘insert’ the fitout of Cafenatics within the existing fabric of the recently upgraded 500 Collins St building, in a space that used to be part of the car park. The existing concrete waffle ceiling has been left exposed. Timber insertions create focus within the space, with lighting elements giving warmth and atmosphere.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
The brief was to create a vibrant space unique to the market, novel on each visit. Guided by style and comfort, custom products and commissioned guaranteed individuality and pushed the boundaries. New and different worlds collide to become a seamless entity, while still meeting the needs of each target market. Everything from the traffic flow to the menu covers express a variety of choices and identities and offer opportunities for adventure. The spectacular lighting, generous spaces, sumptuous seating and celebration of colour create boundless energy.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
The idea behind Drift was to design a bar that feels like a luxurious beach house. Drift is at the centre of Bondi Beach and provides relief from the sprawl of Campbell Parade with an elegant cocktail bar. The materials and finishes allude to a classic weatherboard beachside residence. The impact is heightened by the dramatic selection of colours and textures, lit with Kevin Reilly wax light fittings.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
The idea is to return to solidity of materiality to create a city pub warm in ambience, achieved through use of recycled ironbark flooring, epoxy covered concrete and crimson stained plywood. A ceramic tiled bar with a terrazzo stone top mimics the remnant art deco ceiling. Distinct but flexible spaces accommodate patrons in the reduced square footage; each space features a printed mural (designed collaboratively with Cutts Creative). The main dining area becomes a dance floor and a cosy booth area provides a quiet retreat.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
A modern interpretation of the quintessential French bistro, with a homely feel. The design boasts smoked parquetry floors, French toile fabrics, limed timber trestles, bespoke light shades that reference Moulin Rouge couture and vintage French “Tea Towel Chairs” by designer Suzie Stanford.
Rich, glossy materials, luxurious joinery detailing and oversized furniture give “Le Bar”, below, a sultry and glamorous aesthetic. All furniture and joinery is loose and the space can double as single or multiple function rooms, that are acoustically sealed.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
St Judes Cellars is a restaurant and wine retailer with a stripped back design to match the fare. Raw steel, unfinished fibre cement sheet, whitewashed brickwork, and a sealed concrete floor all combine to create atmosphere. The tables are Victorian Ash and the chairs are vintage Eames – raw, waxed fiberglass. Planter boxes, mesh cages and banquettes break up the space. The feature bar is clad in glossy white mosaic tiles with black grout to emphasise a grid motif, reiterated in the wine racks and stools.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
Hurricanes Bar & Grill is an interpretation of a ‘modern cave’ – dark, claustrophobic, raw and earthy. Situated in a brightly lit shopping mall, the aim was to create an intimate, dark space rich in texture. The flame fired grill is a major focus of the restaurant and the stonework, timber blades, charcoal coloured tiles and exposed flame all contribute to the ambience. Bright red and orange leathers playfully offset these dark materials. The dark mirrored ceiling at the entry of the restaurant reflects the restaurant theatre.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
A “slick and mysterious” venue was the client’s brief. The need for versatile seating and spacing was addressed by dividing areas using distinctive furnishings, drapes, level changes and lighting. The material palette was restricted to black and white finishes to create maximum drama. Cutting edge, interactive led lighting completes the impact. The overall result is a theatrical, yet chic, venue.
