What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
Simple, timeless materials and the use of natural light provide the apartments with a sharp, contemporary aesthetic. The apartments take advantage of floor-to-ceiling windows, drawing on generous light and an open plan, affording dramatic views over Melbourne’s skyline. One East Melbourne apartments afford views from the most frequented spaces, including the master suite. A curved, laminated, opaque glass screen divides the bathroom from the bedroom, acting as a sculptural piece and allowing for natural light transfer.

What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
The existing space was a Dickensian workshop, with leaking shafts of light through rusted old corrugated roofs. Our client wished to retain the original character and most of the texture was too valuable to conceal, so concepts and materials were introduced to contrast and reveal. Use of black form ply and cement render allowed a restrained and subtle transformation of the space into two interconnected apartments. Discarded Japanese cabinetry and detail were assembled to backdrop and mediate between the two apartments
