The Shenton Road Victorian terraces have remained largely unaltered for over a century. The conversion followed the client’s interest in adaptive reuse, and sought to increase the accommodation to three bedrooms, a main living space and outdoor area sandwiched between two dividing boundary walls that run the full length of the site. The linear plan effectively stretched to an abnormal length to create a sense of ‘bigness’. An overhead skylight separates the rear entry from the tension created by the two walls. The influence of post-war modernist courtyard housing in Australia overlays a pragmatic, cost-effective and heritage friendly design.
