What is the ‘big (IDEA)’ behind this project?
The design philosophy for the bike shop was simple: do more by using less. The aesthetic grew from there. We selected simple, readily available materials that need little treatment; plywood, LVLs, polished concrete, in-situ blockwork and black rubber. We used voids to emphasise solidity. The details on the large scale items hint at craftsmanship and humanity. All offcuts were used on the front façade, a kind of pixelated forest. The space is modest and unembellished, but evokes the honesty and intimacy of cycling.
